Industrial Electricity

Graduates of the Industrial Electricity program discover career opportunities in various industries, including Oil & Gas, Mining and Refining, Building Automation, Marine Electrical, Energy, Manufacturing, Construction, and more. Whether it’s installing and upgrading electrical/control systems or retrofitting and maintaining industrial equipment, the skills and knowledge acquired at AVTEC can play a pivotal role in defining your position within an organization.

Industrial Electricity students are introduced to the generation and distribution of AC/DC electricity, residential and commercial wiring methods, industrial motor controls, and electronics. Additionally, they learn to utilize renewable energy technologies such as solar and wind, all while incorporating current NEC codes and procedures through hands-on application. As a result, students develop in-demand skills and become proficient in understanding power and controls, enabling them to work safely and efficiently in the electrical industry.

Students may earn up to 1,000 classroom hours to apply toward requirements to sit for the State of Alaska Journeyman Electrician’s Licensing Exam. Industrial Electricity students also have an opportunity to complete the NCCER testing requirements for the first-year electrical apprenticeship.

Requirements

Information Technology Requirements

Students must demonstrate understanding and fulfill requirements using the following computer hardware and software:

  • Student-supplied laptop computer must have a USB port and be capable of accepting a USB to 9-pin serial converter, or have a 9-pin serial port
  • Ability to connect a USB to Ethernet adapter, printers, install drivers, and access administrator settings
  • Software applications such as MS Word and Excel
  • Ability to use CAD software
  • Use a PDF reader

Employment Requirements

  • Ability to complete work independently and manage time effectively
  • Good mechanical aptitude and familiarity with basic hand tools
  • Demonstrate the ability to show up on time, rested, and dressed for the workday
  • Safety-conscious with situational awareness of surroundings
  • Understanding and willingness to comply with industry safety standards
  • May need to apply for a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card or similar security clearance
  • Clean driving record and ability to earn a valid Alaska driver’s license

Program-Specific Requirements

  • Successful completion of two semesters of High School Algebra with at least a grade of C. Additional math courses like Geometry, Algebra 2, and Trigonometry are recommended
  • Good reading comprehension skills
  • Comfortable with constant physical activity and able to stand for 85 percent of the training day
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs., and perform physical tasks such as climbing, crouching, and working at heights
  • Good vision and ability to distinguish colors accurately
  • Proper prescription safety glasses are recommended for students with prescription lenses
  • Students must supply properly fitting work clothes, steel-toe boots, and other protective gear
